Manure Management

Manure Management on Direct Seeded Land

Project Objectives

Address the management issue of the ability to apply beef manure to direct seeded land without incorporation.

Results
  • Six sites have been established: 5 on direct seeded crop land and 1 on annual forage (alfalfa hay field).
  • Manure was applied to the fields, 4 in the fall and 1 in the spring. 1 crop field and the forage field did not get manured due to excessive moisture (these fields were manure this fall).

  • At the time of manure application samples of manure were sent for analysis and measurement of the application rate occurred.
  • The sites were benchmark soil tested and a complete soil analysis was completed.
  • A comparison measurement of plant establishment and weed establishment was completed 20 days after seeding.
  • A site was visited by 2 tours, the CropMaster annual tour and the AESA Council tour.

Conclusion:  Observations to date combined with farmer input show no major problems associated with the application of manure to direct seeded land and any effects on crop establishment.

The evaluation will continue for another 2 years.
